Furloughed!

Furloughed! All ASU employees (and they make it clear that it really is ALL) will be forced to take a mandatory unpaid furlough of at least 10 days between now and the end of the fiscal year (June 30). For those of you who don't know, Arizona is facing a ridiculous large budget crisis ($1.6 billion dollars in the red). I don't know what they've been doing with their money, but the current cuts to the university system alone total $143 million for the remaining fiscal year. ASU is responsible for roughly 1/2 that amount. Various less-drastic measured had already been taken (hiring freezes; thermostats at 65 in the winter, 82 in the summer--that one's my favorite; some layoffs), so apparently this is the next step. Aren't we glad for an employed husband? I am. A LOT.

Wow, now I feel especially fortunate. Georgia's running a $2 billion shortfall, and though the travel budget's been cut, free food at colloquiums is no more, and the state's Board of Regents authorized a mandatory $100 student fee increase for the current semester less than a month before it began (thank you very much), existing payroll has pretty much been off limits. Here's hoping they don't get any ideas from Arizona . . .

Yeah, a tuition increased for next year is pretty much guaranteed. We'll see how much it affects me. Like I said, I'm just glad that if we absolutely had to, we could get by on Paul's paycheck alone. It wouldn't be the lap of (relative) luxury that we've become accustomed to, but we wouldn't be homeless and starving either.

We are already walking in cold unlit hallways at PHS. And heaven forbid if anyone uses a plug in air freshener. Read the article in today's Herald, and I'll send you an attachment with the district's new energy policy. Randy Merrill is NOT my favorite person right now. Cut special ed services? May we talk lawsuits? I'm so glad Matt is graduating in a few months.

Hi Jennifer.

I finally figured out how to log back into my blogger account (not that I've actually ever blogged, mind you). So annoying!

Anyway, I hope things are going well for you and Paul.
