Know Thy Other Enemy

As promised, here is the random family facts about Paul's family. I can't vouch for their accuracy, but Paul says it's true.

Paul's brother, Nick, has no middle name.

His dad originally told family members that Spencer's name was David. (Spencer is Paul's youngest brother)

Paul had hernia surgery when he was 10 days old.

His mom received a promotion after one week as a teller.

Their family had a long-running "Guess Dad's Youthful Misadventure" contest.

Paul has a set of twins and a set of triplets among his cousins.

His dad was named after Danny Kaye, the singer/actor.

Their family had goldfish named Nephi and Sam.

Nick won a scariest pumpkin carving contest in high school.

His mom once wrote for the Daily Herald.

Spencer loved biting noses as a baby.

Paul's dad has a notoriously bad memory and is frequently accused of making memories up by other family members.

Nick hit his head and forgot it was Christmas one year.

His mom once prank-called her sister and pretended to be the Bay City Rollers.

Very nice, and completely untrue. Ha. Here’s a bit of counter-history:

Paul’s dad has a great memory but a flexible approach to historical accuracy.

When Nephi and Sam died, the next goldfish was named Son of Sam. Not surprisingly, he was also the last goldfish.

The “Guess Dad’s Youthful Misadventure” contest was actually called the “Guess the Felony” contest—of which there were six. The highlight of the contest was the year that Nick guessed “treason.” Oddly enough the church has yet to adopt this quaint family custom.

Paul’s mom moved from teller to head teller to assistant manager to manager to corporate manager to AVP while Paul’s dad moved up only to tenure and to “kept man.” He has no plans for further advancement, on either front.

Nick takes after his dad. Paul takes after his mom. Spencer is too close to call.

Paul and Nick once modeled children’s clothing at a fashion show.

When Spencer was born, the winning name from the family “Name the Child” contest was Seether. Runners-up were Slick and Crank. For whatever reason, Paul’s mom overruled the vote.

Spencer’s birth song was “Iron Man.” He was very cute.

Correction: The winning entry was actually Cain, with Seether et al as runners-up. So much for having a great memory. Lol.

Well, I was trying to be discreet about the whole felony thing. Your mother does read this blog, after all.

I know that you were, and I appreciate it. But I figured, she may not know about the contest, but she already knows about most of the crimes, so . . .(lol). Hi mom.

Hooray for families!
I laughed a lot at both the post and the comments.
Thanks for making my morning brighter!

Bay city rollers?

Actually I think that "guess Dad's felony" thing was featured in the Family Home Evening section of the February 1996 Ensign.

When Spencer was just a wee tike, Paul made up an additional letter for the alphabet: Gorblatt (I don’t know if it’s spelled with one “t” or two. Ha.). We all got in on the act and modified the ABCs song to include the new letter: ABCDEFG. HIJKlmnop. QRS. TUV. WX. YGorbalttZ. Lots of fun, but it caused Spencer no end of trouble in Kindergarten
